World Sleep Day: History, Significance, and Other Things to Know

World Sleep Day is celebrated on March 18 this year

World Sleep Day has been celebrated every year since 2008 before the spring equinox. It was started by a team of medical professionals and its main aim is to raise awareness of the importance of good sleeping habits. These medical professionals came together to form The World Sleep Society.

The World Sleep Society works with a number of news organizations to help spread the word about the effects that sleep can have on daily life. The theme and motto of this year’s conference is ‘Quality sleep, a healthy mind, a happy world’.

World Sleep Day is celebrated in 70 countries, with many health experts believing that sleep-related problems, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, are due to poor sleeping habits in modern society. To maintain healthy sleeping habits, it is necessary to:

  • Make sure they have a fixed time to sleep and wake up
  • Make sure one gets enough sleep
  • Uninterrupted sleep is essential for a fresh awakening
  • While not all of us may have a fixed sleep schedule, making sure you keep your circadian rhythms consistent is essential for a healthy sleep.

So if you’re committed to finding the right schedule for this World Sleep Day and you feel like you have sleep problems like insomnia, make sure you talk to a sleep professional to make a diagnosis.
