The Bundesliga match between Bochum and Borussia Moenchengladbach was postponed on Friday after the assistant referee was hit in the head by a beer cup thrown from a spectator spot. Gladbach had taken a 2-0 lead at Bochum following second-half goals from Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo when the match was interrupted after 71 minutes when lineman Christian Gittelmann received a blow to the head. The referee decided to stop the game forever after 20 minutes. Both clubs immediately took to social media to condemn the incident.

“We can only formally apologize to line keeper Christian Gittelmann,” Bochum said on social media.

“A very embarrassing and bitter night for us. A very stupid act from a stupid fan.”

Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus added: “Things like this shouldn’t happen. It infuriates you when a good football game should end like this.”

Bochum are 11th in the table, two points ahead of Gladbach, in 13th, before Friday’s match.
