US Imposes Sanctions on 5 North Korean Firms on Missile Tests

The statement said North Korea posed a major threat to international peace and security.

Washington:

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on five North Korean entities in response to ballistic missile tests.

“The United States is approving five entities of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) pursuant to Executive Order (EO) 13382, which targets deployers of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their means of delivery.

Today’s action is in response to the DPRK’s ongoing development of WMD and ballistic missile programs that violate various United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, ”Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Foreign Asset Control Department of the Treasury Department (OFAC) is appointing the DPRK Rocket Industry Ministry and four of its subordinate companies, Unchon Trading Corporation, Sungnisan Trading Corporation, Hapjanggang Trading Corporation, and Korea Rounsan Trading Corporation.

The DPRK Rocket Industry Ministry is subordinate to the DPRK Weapons Industry Department, which is responsible for overseeing the DPRK ballistic missile program and was approved by the State Department in 2010.

The DPRK Rocket Industry Ministry is working with DPRK foreign representatives from other DPRK organizations to support the Rocket Industry Ministry’s procurement goals, the statement said.

The DPRK’s increasing launch of ballistic missiles-including at least three recent intercontinental ballistic missile tests-is a blatant violation of UNSC resolutions and poses a major threat to regional stability as well as international peace and security, according to the statement. .

“We continue to coordinate closely with our allies and partners to address the threats posed by the DPRK’s instability activities and to advance our common objective for the complete nuclear elimination of the Korean Peninsula.”

“We remain committed to diplomacy with the DPRK and call on the DPRK to engage in dialogue. At the same time, we continue to urge all UN Member States to fully implement UNSC resolutions addressing the DPRK to curb its ability to advance it. WMD and ballistic missile programs violate the law, “the statement said.

As a result of today’s restrictions, any property or interest in the property of designated persons in the possession or control of U.S. persons or entities or within the United States must be blocked, and U.S. persons prohibited from dealing with any designated party, it added.
