US President Joe Biden said his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power” and called the conflict in Ukraine a “strategic failure” for Moscow in a keynote speech in Warsaw.

Biden compared Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression to the anti-Soviet “battle of freedom” and said the world must be prepared for a “long battle ahead”.

“We stand with you,” he told the people of Ukraine.

Speaking to ordinary Russians, he said that they were “not our enemies” and urged them to blame Putin for the heavy economic sanctions imposed by the West.

He also warned Russia not to move within “an inch” of NATO territory, reiterating the “sacred duty” of collective defense for alliance members.

At the beginning of his speech at the Royal Palace of the Polish capital, he repeated the words of the late pope John Paul II who told the people of Ukraine: “Do not be afraid.”

At the end of his speech, he said: “We will have a different future, a brighter future based on democracy and principles, hope and light.

“For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,” he said.
