The joke Will Smith made about a bald man in 1991 went viral after the Slapgate Oscars. For those who don’t know (and does anyone know?), Presenter Chris Rock mocks Will Jada Pinkett’s shaved head of wife, comparing it to the GI Jane character played by Demi Moore in a 90s movie where she had a buzzcut. While Will laughed at first, he erupted a few seconds later – probably by Jada’s gaze – and stormed towards Chris, hit him and then shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
Amid almost unanimous condemnation of Will Smith’s actions, Twitter has revived-and is now famous-a clip from the appearance King Richard | stars are made on Arsenio Hall performance in 1991. Will is Bel-Air Fresh Price at the time and continued to be too fresh with a bald inner band bassist.
“Bass player? He gets the rules. He has to whiten his head every morning. That’s the rule! He follows the rules, man. He follows the rules,” Will Smith said in the clip – the camera cuts to bass player John B Williams, who smiled in response. When the camera turns to Will, someone – either Arsenio or the audience – calls him “rude”; “This is a joke, come on,” Will replied.

“He must whiten his head every morning.” Now this is a video of Will Smith talking jokes about someone with Alopecia.

RollingStone contacted John B Williams, a well -known bass and bass guitarist. “I don’t take it seriously. He’s a comedian. He is The New Prince of Bel-Air. He’s a rapper. I consider it a joke. I laughed, “Mr. Williams said. He also explained that although the two jokes – Will Smith sacrificing himself and Chris Rock sacrificing Jada Pinkett – were similar in subject, Mr. Williams’ baldness was not due to alopecia while Jada was.
John B Williams also told RollingStone that Will Smith lost his temper because the joke was on his wife and not him. When Chris first made the comment, Will laughed. Until it became clear Jada didn’t think it was funny that Will went to defend her. Love makes you do all sorts of things. That is his wife, whom he loves. He just reacted out of anger. I sometimes react out of anger, “he said.
Will Smith himself offered the same reason, first in a tearful Best Actor Oscar acceptance speech – “Love will make you do crazy things” – and then in an Instagram post where he apologized to Chris Rock by name and also wrote: “Jokes at my expense was part of the job, but the joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

Regardless of Will Smith’s intentions and apology, there may be calculations. The Academy, which tweeted after the Oscars that it does not “acknowledge violence in any form,” is conducting an investigation and will decide whether this year’s Best Actor should face consequences. Chris Rock, who calmed down and proceeded with the presentation of the awards he was about to present, declined to lodge a police report and so far has not commented publicly.
