After a group of men attacked four women outside a restaurant in China recently, the city of Tangshan has been stripped of its honorary “civilized” status. The attack on the woman has sparked public outrage with many demanding justice.

Footage from a barbecue restaurant camera on June 10 showed a man slapping and dragging a woman into the street with his hair after she appeared to push his advance. Another man then joined in, attacking his girlfriend and leaving two women lying on the side of the road.

Two of the women are still being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), officials said this week, while authorities said they have detained nine people involved in the attack.

The incident, recorded by CCTV cameras, also renewed national discussions on violence against women in China.

The hashtag on social media site Weibo began making the rounds after the incident in Tangshan in northern Hebei province. Soon after that caught the attention of consumers, NBC News reported.

The video has been viewed hundreds of millions of times. Hundreds of thousands of people commented after the video of the attack was posted online with most of them demanding action against the accused.

The Civilization Office of the Central Communist Party Committee on Wednesday removed the city from the country’s honorary “civilized city” list.

According to the official website of the office, “Civilized city of the country” was selected based on eight criteria, including good social order and a healthy social atmosphere and moving up.

Tangshan has been awarded the status four times since 2011, the most recent in 2020. The committee’s decision is the latest in a series of official responses to attacks and waves of anger sparked online.

Following the attack, Hebei provincial security authorities on Tuesday launched a disciplinary review and investigation into the Tangshan police bureau’s response to the incident.
