Swiss Open: Srikanth Starts Victory, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy pair Surprise All-England Champions

Seventh seed Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal made their winning start in the singles competition while Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy faced All England champions Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana to advance in the Swiss Open here on Wednesday. Srikanth defeated Mads Christophersen in a straight match in the men’s singles opening round. The Indian beat the Dane 21-16, 21-17 in a match of 32 minutes. Parupalli Kashyap also won 21-17, 21-9 over Frenchman Enogat Roy to enter the second round. In the all-India competition, HS Prannoy defeated B Sai Praneeth 25-23, 21-16 in an intense match lasting 48 minutes.

Third seed Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy overcame Indonesian pair Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana after losing the first match in the men’s doubles opening round. The final score line reads 17-21, 21-11, 21-18.

The Indonesian duo won the All England title last week.

In the women’s singles, Ashmita Chaliha created the script of a rebound victory over Frenchman LeOnice Huet, winning 19-21, 21-10, 21-11.

Later that day, London Olympics bronze medalist Saina defeated Yaelle Hoyaux 21-8, 21-13 in her opening round match.

The mixed doubles of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sumeeth Reddy lost in the first round match and so did the combined women’s doubles of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand.

The Chinese badminton team withdrew from the Super 300 tournament that began on Tuesday due to several COVID-19 cases and injuries to its players.
