Kidambi Srikanth of India beat No. 1 player. 3 World and second seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark in an intense three -match encounter to enter the Swiss Open men’s singles semi -finals here in St. Petersburg. World championship silver medalist Srikanth started well and led 9-1 early in the opening match but Antonsen bounced back bravely to win 10 points on a run as both players entered the break of the opening game with the Danes leading 11-9. After the break the Thunder-born player won three points in a row to once again take the lead after a see-through bout the Indian finally won the opening match 21-19 and led one match.
In the second game, the Indian also started in a similar way with an early lead of 9-6. Srikanth entered the break with an 11-9 lead. After the break, the two opposing players fought brilliantly and tied the score at 19-19 but Anders Antonsen won twice in a row to win the second match 21-19 to make it a match.
In the third and deciding match, the World No.3 from Denmark led early 4-1 but the former World No.1 Srikanth won three points in a row to make it 4-4. At 7-7, Antonsen won six points in a row to take a big 13-7 lead but Srikanth was not ready to give up without a match as he also won six points quickly to make the score 13-13. At 15-15, Srikanth won three points in a row to take an 18-15 lead but the Dane struggled to come back to take the match points at 20-19 but World Championship silver medalist Srikanth withstood the courage to win third and final. game 22-20.
With a 21-19 19-21 22-20 victory in the quarterfinals that lasted for an hour and 19 minutes the seventh seed Kidambi Srikanth will now face World No.8 Jonathan Christie of Indonesia for a place in the final.
