Spotify is reportedly testing a new ‘audio news feed’ feature for easy podcast discovery on its app. The new interface is said to provide a TikTok -style vertical scroll feed featuring 60 -second clips from various podcasts. It reportedly uses technology developed by startup company Podz, which Spotify acquired last year. This feature is currently said to be available for a limited number of users. These users get a dedicated ‘Podcast’ button in the app to access the vertical feed.
According to a report by TechCrunch, Spotify is said to use technology developed by Podz for this feature. It reportedly uses a machine learning model that has been trained on 100,000 hours of audio to automatically select clips from podcasts. Podz was acquired by Spotify in June 2021.
Product designer Chris Messina shared together test video of this new ‘audio news feed’ via its Twitter handle. This video features a dedicated ‘Podcast’ button in the app that takes users to a vertical feed. The feed is filled with clips from the podcast that users may enjoy with the layout including the cover art of the relevant podcast clip. The clip will be transcribed as it is played with the word highlighted as it is spoken. Users can press the play button if they want to continue listening to the podcast outside of the clip. There is also a ‘+’ button to add episodes to the ‘Your Episodes’ list. Keep in mind that new feeds may undergo some changes before the last build is released.
Spotify has reportedly confirmed the use of Podz technology but has not shared its plans for a broader release of the feature or a development roadmap. Spotify will likely survive as it acquires more data to improve the service before launch.
