Smriti Irani’s “Women Member” Speech To MPs Sparks Debate In Lok Sabha

Union Minister Smriti Irani said he had not said anything contrary to parliament

New Delhi:

The Iranian Smriti Union Minister today wondered why a woman MP cannot be called a woman.

Her statement was made after Congress Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary and Sougata Ray of the Trinamool Congress objected to Ms Irani referring to Geetha Viswanath Vanga of the YSRCP as a woman member during Question Time at the Lok Sabha.

They said the minister should have called her a “respected member”, which Ms Irani said whatever she said was not against parliament and referring to women members as women was not wrong.

“I don’t underestimate his presence in the House,” Ms Irani said.

Anubhav Mohanty of BJD stood up in support of Ms Irani, saying he did not use any unparalleled or insulting or incorrect words.
