Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu has won the first round matches in every English tournament

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal Ace, the Indian shuttles, started their English Grand Slam campaign on Wednesday in Birmingham, in the women’s singles, with easy live matches. Sixth-placed Sindhu beat China’s Zhi Yi Wang 21-18 and 21-13 in a 42-minute first-leg match, and Saina beat Spain’s Beatriz Corrales 21-17 and 21-19 in 38 minutes.

World No. 7 Sindhu will announce the winner of the first round between Japanese Sayaka Takahashi and Thai Supanida Katethong in the second round.

Saina, who reached the final here in 2015, will face the winner of the first round match between Japanese Akane Yamaguchi and Estonian Kristin Kuuba in the second round.

If Sindhuk and Saina win their respective second-round matches, they will face off in the quarter-finals. In the men’s event, B Sai Praneeth lost 20-22 and 11-21 in the first round match against Viktor Axels, the first qualifier and the Olympic champion.

HS Prannoy beat last week’s German Open winner Kunlavut Vitidsarn 15-21 and 22-24 in the 56th minute, and Sameer Verma also beat Dutchman Mark Caljouw 18-21 11-21 in the opening 41 minutes.

In the men’s doubles, fifth-placed Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Scottish pair Alexander Dunn and Adam Hall 21-17 and 21-19 in 38 minutes.

But MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila lost 21-15 12-21 18-21 against Indonesia’s second-placed Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

The other Indian pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala also suffered a defeat at the hands of German pair Mark Lamfuss and Marvin Seidel in 16-21 19-21 37 minutes.


In the women’s doubles, Treesa Jolly and Pullela Gayatri Gopichand reached the second round with a 17-21 22-20 21-14 win over Thai pair Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard in one hour and seven minutes.
