Russia’s Capture of Chernobyl Puts the World on the “Brink of Disaster”: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky -By ASC

Zelensky also said that Russia fired missiles into Ukraine directly on Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Russia’s capture of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the early phases of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine had pushed the world toward “the brink of disaster”.

“The world is once again on the brink of disaster” because Russia treats the Chernobyl zone “like a normal battlefield, a territory where they don’t care at all about nuclear safety”, Zelensky said during a press conference with UN chief atomic observer Rafael Grossi.

“No country in the world since 1986 has posed a greater threat to nuclear security in Europe and the world than Russia since February 24,” he added, referring to the date Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to invade Ukraine.

Grossi, meanwhile, told reporters his job was to make sure that “the tragedy of war will not escalate with a nuclear accident”.

He said there would be “special work dedicated to rehabilitation, restoration of all capacity there and infrastructure damaged in the last few weeks”.

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon Zelensky said that Russia had fired missiles into Ukraine directly on Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

“Are they threatening us?” he said.

He added that after seeing how the Russian military has been operating in the Chernobyl zone and around the southern Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, “no one in the world can feel safe.”

The Russian army took over the site on February 24, the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, taking Ukrainian soldiers captive and detaining civil servants.

The occupation lasted until the end of March and raised global concerns over nuclear leaks.
