Russia will begin its own mission to Mars after Europe suspended its joint project

“We will start working on a mission to Mars in the near future,” Russia said.

Russia will begin work on its Mars mission after the European Space Agency (ESA) canceled a joint project in the wake of the Ukrainian invasion, the Interfax news agency reported on Friday.

ESA announced on Thursday that it would be impossible to continue cooperating with Russia on the ExoMars mission. A Russian rocket was supposed to transport a European-made rover to Mars this year.

“We will start working on a mission to Mars in the near future,” said Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos.

Interfax said it did not believe a rover would be necessary because the existing landing module in Russia, which is designed to transport the rover, could do the necessary scientific work.

Rogozin said there were “big doubts” about what ESA could do without Russia, which already had a rocket, a firing range and a landing module. It would take the ESA at least six years to develop its module, he said.

In the wake of the sanctions, Roskosmos has already suspended its cooperation with Europe in space launch and announced that it will stop supplying rocket engines to the United States.
