Russia used its latest Kinzhal hypersonic missile for the first time in Ukraine on Friday to destroy weapons storage sites in the west of the country, the defense ministry said.
Russia has never before admitted to using high-precision weapons in combat, and state news agency RIA Novosti said it was Kinzhal’s first use of hypersonic weapons during the conflict in pro-Western Ukraine.
“The Kinzhal flight missile system with hypersonic aerobalistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and flight missiles in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region,” Russia’s defense ministry said on Saturday.
A defense ministry spokesman declined to comment when contacted by AFP.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has termed the Kinzhal (Dagger) missile as an “ideal weapon” that flies at a speed 10 times the sound and can override the air defense system.
The Kinzhal missile is one of a variety of new weapons Putin introduced in his 2018 state speech.
Deliatyn, a village in the foothills of the beautiful Carpathian mountains, is located on the outskirts of Ivano-Frankivsk.
The Ivano-Frankivsk region shares a 50-kilometer (30-mile) long border with NATO member Romania.
