New Delhi:

The 94th Academy Awards have left many of us stunned. While our hearts were beating fast to see if any of our favorite options won the prize, there was other fun as well. Given the number of South Asian nominations this year, it’s not too much to ask for a few winners from this group. And, we were not disappointed. In fact, we have not one but two winners of South Asian origin. Actor Riz Ahmed and producer Joseph Patel were among the handful who approached the pedestal and were able to win the award. Riz Ahmed won an Oscar for Goodbye long. And, Joseph Patel’s name was praised for the documentary Summer of Souls.

Riz Ahmed is a British-Pakistani actor. He has won an Oscar for his live -action short film Aneil Karia Goodbye long. Riz is the producer of the film and once co -wrote it. Please note, this is his first Academy Award. Goodbye long is based on the same Riz album, released last year. For those who don’t know, Aneil is also of Indian descent. Now, it’s time to look at Riz Ahmed’s acceptance speech. And, it goes something like this, “In a time of fragmentation, we believe that the role of the story is to remind us that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’. There is only ‘us’.” He added, “This is for everyone who feels like they don’t belong. Anyone who feels like they’re stuck in nobody’s land. You’re not alone. We’ll meet you there. That’s where the future is. Peace.” This is not Riz’s first nomination. Last year, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a hearing -impaired drummer Metal sounds.

On the other hand, Joseph Patel is a producer, writer, director and executive whose origins can be traced back to Baroda in Gujarat. He co -produced a full feature documentary Summer of Soul (… Or, If the Revolution Can’t Be Broadcast), which won the Best Documentary Feature award. Indian Documentary, Writing With Fire, directed by filmmaker duo Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh took part in the joint race Hike, Attica and run away. Summer of Souls, directed by Questlove, is based on the “1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that celebrates African-American music and culture and promotes Black pride and unity.”

And, when we see South Asians at the Oscars, how can we not talk about the pre-Oscar party by Priyanka Chopra on Thursday. The event organized for the South Asian Oscar nominees was co-hosted by Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, Anjula Acharia, Bela Bajaria, Maneesh K Goyal and Shruti Ganguly. Citing it as a special honor, Priyanka wrote, “A pre-oscar celebration honoring 10 South Asian Oscar nominees this year, and friends, family and colleagues who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make all of this possible. Last night gave I all feel and fill me with so much pride because of how far our community has gone. The future of entertainment looks bright. “
