“The slap that ended it all,” as Twitter put it, had overtaken Will Smith’s first Oscar – minutes before he won Best Actor, Will slapped and cursed Chris Rock who joked about Jada Pinkett’s wife. In a brief statement posted on its official Twitter holder, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Oscars, said it does not “forgive violence.” The statement read: “The Academy does not condone violence in any form. Tonight we are honored to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winner, who deserves recognition from peers and film lovers around the world.” No name was named, neither in the Academy’s statement nor in Will Smith’s acceptance speech that he used to apologize.

Meanwhile, Chris Rock will not file a police report against Will Smith, the Los Angeles Police Department or LAPD said. “The LAPD investigating entity became aware of the incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual refused to lodge a police report. If the party wants a police report at a later date, the LAPD will be available to complete the investigation report,” he said. The LAPD in a statement, the PTI news agency reported.

It all exploded when Chris Rock joked that Jada Pinkett was supposed to be in the movie GI Jane, referring to her shaved head – Jada suffers from alopecia. His reaction was a look in his eyes and Will Smith, who was sitting next to him, seemed to be laughing. The camera cuts back to Chris Rock, only to catch Will rushing towards him and taking a swing. It landed. Returning to his seat, Will shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn king’s mouth.”

It soon became clear that the moment was unwritten and not a planned skit. The next presenter, Sean Combs – known to fans in various ways as P Diddy, Puff Daddy and the like – tried to control the damage. Diddy, introducing The Godfather’s 50th birthday celebration, “Will and Chris, we’re going to settle it like a family. Now we’re moving on with love.”

When Will Smith’s Best Actor win was announced, he seemed to regret losing his temper. “I want to apologize to the academy. I want to apologize to all my nominee friends … The art of imitating life.
