Odisha Weather: Mercury soared up to 43 degrees Celsius or more at 11 weather stations.

Odisha was scorching under the scorching sun on Wednesday as scorching heat waves hit parts of the state for the third day in a row and maximum temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius in 24 places, the Met office said.

Mercury soared to 43 degrees Celsius or more at 11 weather stations, including the city of Subarnapur where it was 44.5 degrees Celsius, the highest this season, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Center said.

The streets looked deserted as scorching heat scorched the districts of Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Deogarh and Bargarh, the bulletin said.

This condition occurs when the maximum temperature is 4.5-6.4 notches above normal and at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains or 37 in coastal areas at two or more weather stations in the Met subdivision for two consecutive days.

Temperatures soared five degrees above average to reach 40.1 degrees Celsius in Balasore. It rose three notches each to reach 40.3 degrees Celsius in the capital and 40.2 in Chandbali in Bhadrak.

Angul boils at 44.1 degrees Celsius, while 44 each in Jharsuguda and Bolangir. Cuttack recorded a temperature of 39.5, two levels above average, the weather office said.

The hot weather is expected to continue as there will be no major changes in maximum temperature over the next four to five days. Temperatures will exceed normal levels by three to five notches in the interior of Odisha and two to three levels in some areas in coastal areas, according to the department.

The center issued a ‘yellow warning’ of heat waves in western Odisha for the next three days and in 11 districts on Thursday. The warning indicates that heat is acceptable, but there are few health concerns for vulnerable parts such as the elderly and infants.

It urged the public to take precautions while out from 11am to 3pm in the area.
