A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly beheading an eight-year-old girl and wandering with the severed head across a village in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Friday, police said.
The motive behind the horrific incident, which caused shock in the village in the Jamankira block, has yet to be ascertained, they said.
The girl had gone to rest on a farmland in the morning, after which the accused went there with an ax and beheaded her. Then, he roamed the village while holding the severed head, went to the tube well and washed it.
The accused’s wife got into a heated argument with him when she saw him, but he threatened her with an ax. Then the accused slept on the ground there.
Police rushed to the scene and arrested the man. Preliminary investigations revealed that he was an alcoholic, but did not have any animosity with the family of the dead girl, said Kuchinda division police officer Rajkishore Mishra.
“We still haven’t been able to ascertain what was playing on his mind when he committed the crime,” the official said.
According to the villagers, quarreling with his family was common for the accused who is the father of two daughters, however he is not a mentally handicapped person.
The weapon was seized and the girl’s body was sent for autopsy, Jamankira police station inspector Premjeet Das said, adding that an investigation was underway.
