Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe: 10 points in a row with the British-Iranian

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe returned to the United Kingdom after being imprisoned in Iran for 6 years

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe returned to his home in the United Kingdom after serving six years in prison in the Iranian capital Tehran. Why was he arrested in the first place and what does this have to do with the UK’s £ 400 million debt to Iran?

Here are 10 points about his release:

  1. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was born in Tehran and worked as an English teacher before marrying the British national Richard Ratcliffe, and later moved to London.

  2. Zaghari-Ratcliffe is a 43-year-old project manager for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, a philanthropic branch of the media and data agency.

  3. He was arrested on April 3, 2016 by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at Tehran Airport and accused of plotting to overthrow the Islamic Republican regime, which he denied.

  4. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was sentenced to five years in prison and spent many days in solitary confinement.

  5. His family says they believe he was held as a political prisoner until the debt between Britain and Iran was settled.

  6. The United Kingdom has deliberately refrained from saying that the arrest of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and other political prisoners detained in Iran was linked to the debt of a tanker order suspended after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

  7. But as soon as the release was announced, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss confirmed that London and Tehran had resolved the £ 394 million ($ 515 million) issue “after very complex and detailed negotiations”.

  8. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also confirmed that Iran had received the money, but added that “it is wrong for Iran to receive debt … to link it to the release of these people.”

  9. On 14 March, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was given back her UK passport, according to British MP Tulip Siddiq.

  10. Zaghari-Ratcliffe reunited with his family on March 17 after 6 years, flew from Iran to Oman and finally flew to the UK.
