Mr Sidhu praised the Punjab people for their “excellent” decision to push for change by bringing the Aam Aadmi Party to power after the party’s defeat.
Asked how he could say he was president of Congress, he said the people have chosen change and are never wrong. “The voice of the people is the voice of God. We must humbly understand and bow down,” he added.
Congress, which was initially considered a major contender when it had to be a tough multi-faceted fight in the state election, suffered a blow at the hands of the AAP, which resulted in a landslide victory, winning 92 out of a total of 117 seats. . The old party had a sharp drop in the share votes compared to the 2017 election, with Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi also losing two competing seats.
Mr Sidhu himself lost his seat in East Amritsar against Jeevanjyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with a margin of over 6,000 votes. While receiving 32,929 votes, Ms. Kaur received 39,520 votes.
