Indian pharmaceutical companies could replace Western manufacturers out of the Russian market, Russian envoy Denis Alipov said on Friday.
“Many Western companies are withdrawing from the Russian market and these vacant niches can be occupied by Indian companies in many industries, especially pharmaceuticals,” Mr Alipov told Rossiya 24, the Sputnik news agency reported. .
The newly appointed Russian envoy added that India is the “world’s pharmacy” and the main manufacturer of copies of medicines that are no worse than the original ones.
India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative last year strengthened its credentials as a “world pharmacy”.
World leaders have publicly praised India’s efforts to rapidly expand vaccine production and supply in times of pandemic.
This decision to replace pharmaceutical manufacturers comes at a time when Russia has been bombarded with sanctions from Western countries. Russia now wants to increase its economic engagement with non-European countries.
Earlier this month, Mr Alipov said Moscow had welcomed India’s independent foreign policy between Russia and Ukraine.
On relations with India, Alipov said: “The Prime Minister (Modi) and the Indian leader agree with the coherent independent state policy on international affairs. We have repeatedly stated that we welcome India’s independent foreign policy and strengthen its role. ».
The Russian envoy also praised India’s foreign policy stance on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
