Ukraine War: The number of civilian deaths in Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression has surpassed 1,000.

US President Joe Biden will visit a Polish city near the border with Ukraine today, seeking to show Western determination against Russian aggression.

“NATO has never, never been more united than it is today,” Biden said on Thursday after the NATO summit in Brussels. He also said NATO would “respond” if Russia used chemical weapons in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was a “real” threat that Moscow would use chemical weapons in his country, accusing Russia of using phosphorus bombs against civilians in an overnight attack on a Ukrainian village that killed at least four people, including two children.

Russia also accused NATO member Poland, which borders Ukraine, of initiating a “dangerous escalation” in tensions between Moscow and the West after Warsaw expelled 45 Russian diplomats for allegedly spying.

The United Nations human rights office said on Thursday that at least 1,035 people had been killed and 1,650 wounded in a month of war in Ukraine.

Complicated questions arose when facial recognition technology joined the Ukrainian war
Ukraine is using facial recognition technology to identify invading Russian soldiers killed on its soil, a complex and unprecedented path for software seen as problematic, experts said on Thursday.

The attacked country used details of the results of the process to try to track down and inform the families of the victims, in an action that Ukraine says aims to penetrate Russia’s war information filters.

While this type of artificial intelligence can offer closure to families denied by the fog of war or Kremlin secrecy, the potential for error is huge and consequential.

“If you’re a Russian parent informed that your child was murdered when it wasn’t true, that would be a complex ethical dilemma,” said Jim Hendler, director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York state.

US -based Clearview AI, often criticized by privacy advocates, said it gives Ukrainian officials free access to its service that matches images from the internet with photos uploaded by users trying to identify someone.

Russia is overburdening China after the Ukrainian invasion, U.S. Pentagon officials said
Russia’s aggression on Ukraine has made it more of a strategic burden on China, a senior Pentagon official said on Thursday.

“I think there is a level where what Putin has done in Ukraine is making Russia more of a strategic burden for Beijing than it was six weeks or six months ago,” said Defense Division Secretary for Policy Colin Kahl.

In February, China and Russia declared a “no limits” partnership, supporting each other over a stalemate over Ukraine and Taiwan with a promise to cooperate more against the West.

Russia -Ukraine War: US Officials Say Russia Will Be Weak Military, Economic, Political
Russia will rise from the conflict in a weaker and more isolated Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official said on Thursday.

“I think with a high degree of certainty that Russia will emerge from Ukraine weaker than the conflict. Militaryly weaker, economically weaker, politically and geopolitically weaker, and more isolated,” said Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl.
