When the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 starts, one player who will get attention is Hardik Pandya. Pandya’s younger brother will play the role of captain for the first time this season, when he leads the new IPL franchise of the Gujarat Titans (GT). But the focus will also be on whether he will play or not. Although originally a versatile man, fitness problems have seen him play massively as a hitter over the past few years.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri thinks if he does not add more bowling games, he may not return to join the Indian T20 squad.
“In the top five, there’s a lot of muscle there. If anyone occupies No. 5, 6 and beyond, he has to bring that extra part into the game. That’s why from Hardik’s point of view, from the Indian point of view. From the Gujarat team’s point of view, it’s very it’s important for him to combine those two or three overs together because if he does and does bowling with limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team, ”Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.
He said that the No.6 position for India is now set for versatile players.
“I think the position of a versatile player at No. 6 is for sure. Ideally someone in the top five who can do two or three overs. That takes the pressure off the captain. It gives him six and a half bowlers out of him. Can choose. That would be an area that I’m going to look at closely. And of course fast bowling and fielding. I’m not so worried about shots. The hits are there, “he said.
The Gujarat Titans will start their campaign on Monday against newcomer Lucknow Super Giants.
