Ajinkya Rahane’s 44-run knockout made half a century of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in vain when the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat the Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), here at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Rahane scored 44 runs while Umesh Yadav blasted two wickets as KKR recorded a six -wicket win over CSK with 9 balls remaining.
Chasing 132, KKR openers Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer gave their team a great start as they scored 43 runs in a powerful game. CSK finally breathed a sigh of relief when Venkatesh was caught by Dhoni during a Dwayne Bravo delivery.
Nitish Rana then joined Rahane and troubled the CSK bowler for a brief period and took off after scoring 21 runs, with 76 runs on the board. Following Rana’s dismissal, Rahane also perished on a Mitchell Santner pass as he was caught by Ravindra Jadeja, bringing the team’s total to 87/3 in 11.4 overs.
KKR captains Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings came to the fold and anchored the innings. Both made 123 points but before they could traverse them through the win line, Billings were sent off by Bravo for 25 runs.
Then, Shreyas, who was later joined by Sheldon Jackson, finished the match with a boundary with 6 wickets and 9 balls remaining in hand.
Earlier, Dhoni scored a half -century unbeaten goal to give CSK, led by Jadeja, a respectable total of 131/5, after they faced an early wicket loss.
CSK will now face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their next clash on March 31 while KKR will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 30.
Short score: Chennai Super Kings (Dhoni 50*, Jadeja 26*; Umesh Yadav 2/20) vs. Kolkata Knight Riders 133/4 (Rahane 44, Billings 25; Bravo 3/20).
