Royal Challengers Bangalore put on a great bowling performance on Wednesday to beat the strong Kolkata Knight Riders batting unit by just 128, creating their first win in IPL 2022. Akash Deep and Wanindu Hasaranga did damage up front but KKR had a long shot of the lineup and they have hopes of making a recovery with Andre Russell hitting hard in midfield. It was at this stage that Faf du Plessis used his trump card. Harshal Patel, last season’s purple hat winner and RCB’s death bowling expert, was brought in with him starting to create problems for Russell immediately.

He beat two inaugural overs and eventually sent dangerous overseas duo Sam Billings and Russell back to end KKR’s hopes for a late resurrection. He ended up with a 2/11 figure as KKR was beaten for a total below par.

Harshal’s performance in the IPL last season meant he was retained in large numbers by RCB and has also placed him in the Indian T20 team. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised Harshal for developing himself into a great deadly bowler.

“I’ve talked to him in the Indian team, he knows his bowling. He’s confident and he’s not too fond of bowling to anyone. It looks like he’s set aside for Andre Russell, which is a big thing. A lot of people can be too impressed and scared.

“He was very clear in his mind that he was going to do bowling at wide and he was going to take a step off the ball and see how it went after that. There was a big improvement in his bowling and he understood his game and made it easy.” Shastri said.

Harshal Patel also impressed with a bat in hand as he hit two important boundaries at the closing stage of the RCB chase to help his team cross the line.
