The Chennai Super Kings suffered their sixth defeat in eight matches in the ongoing IPL 2022, losing to the Punjab Kings by 11 runs on Monday night. CSK once again made a bad start in the chase and despite the stunning attack from Ambati Rayudu left themselves too much to do towards the back of the inning. The team’s shots failed to consolidate this season and with Moeen Ali injured, they experimented with sending New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner one-down. The attempt failed to bear fruit as Santner was sent to pack 9 of 15 balls by Arshdeep Singh.
Kevin Pietersen, who was commenting on the assignment at the time, was not impressed with Santner’s tactics against Arshdeep. The former England star first dissected the dismissal before digging up the New Zealander, saying “but he’s a spinner”.
“The thing is, if you’re expecting it outside, why are you getting farther outside. Stand next to the foot of the ball and you have more chances to free your hand because anything that’s a sixth, seventh, eighth stump is always a straight shot. Whereas, if you’re standing next to the foot of the ball and you think it’s going to be on the outside, you can spray from the outside. You can really flap hard through the outside-side. So the tactics there aren’t understood from Santner, but he’s a spinner. “

Pietersen’s fellow commentator Deep Dasgupta laughed before saying: “That’s so unfair Kevin!”
CSK’s defeat means they remain in ninth place in the IPL points table with just two wins to their name this season. They are just above the Mumbai Indians in the bottom spot who have yet to win a match in the 2022 IPL.
