Defending champions India will open their campaign against arch -rivals Pakistan in the Asian Cup men’s hockey tournament to be held here from May 23 to June 1. India and Pakistan will face each other in the final match of the opening day of the tournament. Olympic bronze medalists Tokyo, India were placed in a tough Group A alongside Japan, Pakistan and hosts Indonesia, while Group B consisted of Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh.

After Pakistan, India will face Japan on May 24 followed by the final group match against Indonesia on May 26.

The tournament will be played in a Super4s pool format with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the next level.

The final of the tournament will take place on June 1.


India and Pakistan have won the Asian Cup three times each, while South Korea is the most successful team with four titles.

The Indian title appeared in 2003 in Kuala Lumpur, in 2007 in Chennai and in 2017 in Dhaka.
