India Develops Ties With Russia Because The US Could Not Do It Earlier: Antony Blinken -By ASC

Stressing that there is now a growing strategic convergence between the United States and India, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said New Delhi built its partnership with Moscow on necessity because the US was not in a position to do so sooner.

“In the case of India, there has been a relationship that has been going on for decades. And Russia, for India, is beyond the need for a preferred partner when we are not in a position to be a partner,” he told lawmakers on Wednesday.

“Now, we’re investing in that effort. I think there’s a growing strategic convergence between the United States and India,” Blinken said.

“And of course, China is a big part of that,” Blinken said in response to Senator William Hagerty’s question during a Congressional hearing by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on National, Foreign Operations.

Hagerty has asked for Blinken’s views on India-US relations.

“What I’ve seen before us is something I’m sure that’s very frustrating in the short term when we have a difference and you deal with it every day,” Hagerty said.

“But in the long run, the strategic partnership we have with India I think provides an opportunity to do more good in the 21st century,” he said.

Blinken in response said he strongly shared the perspective shared by the Senator.

“I think this partnership has the potential to be one of the most important and fundamental partnerships we have in the future in the next decade,” he said.

Blinken said US President Joe Biden had spent “a lot of time to engage directly with Prime Minister Modi and the Indian leadership”.

“We have energized Quad which brings India along with Australia and Japan and us. This has been a very important vehicle to strengthen our cooperation across various fields with India,” he said.

“What’s interesting is that this is a moment of strategic change, which I mean this. A number of countries are now revisiting some of their relations and some of their interests, especially when it comes to their relations with Russia,” he added. American diplomat.
