Ravi Shastri’s tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team from 2017 to 2021 saw some success with two consecutive Test series wins in Australia winning the cake. Shastri and Virat Kohli guided India to win their inaugural Test series below in 2018-19, and then the team also won their next tour to Australia in 2020-21. Both wins opened a new era of confidence for Team India, which later qualified for the finals of the inaugural World Test Championship as well. Shastri, in a recent interview, revealed how the winning mentality is constructed.
Members of the Australian cricket team are known for their mind games and sleds, and Shastri has the medicine to overcome them when India face them in two series away.
“… it’s about attitude, especially when playing in Australia. I tell boys if one ‘f *** you’ comes at you, give them three back: two in our language and one in their language,” Shastri, the former the coach of the Indian cricket team, told The Guardian in an interview.
Under Shastri and Kohli, the Indian team also led 2-1 in the Test series in England. The final test of the 2021 series had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the Indian camp with the last match of the five-match series to be played in July this year.
“How many teams can win in Australia – beat attacks with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood from a 1-0 deficit – and then win in England? That’s hard for any team to emulate for a long time,” Shastri said. .
He went on to describe how an aggressive attitude transformed an Indian fast bowler into a strong unit.
“… we know victory in Australia or England doesn’t come with a spin, it’s a fast bowler, a guy with aggression like Jasprit Bumrah. We play an important role in making sure the guy plays Test cricket. You don’t need an express beat, you just need attitude, “he said.
