Hyundai Motor India to bring 2022 World’s Best Car – Hyundai IONIQ 5 all -electric to India in the second half of this year
The flagship model for Hyundai around the world is definitely the new EV – the Hyundai IONIQ 5. carandbike is the first to confirm that an electric crossover is coming to India. Part of Hyundai’s large model EV 6 strategy, ₹ 4000 crore EV strategy for India, the IONIQ 5 will be the first of an E-GMP car. That’s the name of a dedicated EV platform developed by Hyundai Motor Group and has already spawned the IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 (also announced for India), and Genesis GV60.

More models are coming on this skateboard platform, including a smaller volume model for India. The IONIQ 5 will be installed in India at Hyundai Motor’s plant outside Chennai. The launch for this EV is expected in late September – making sure the car is on track for its October debut which we’ve reported exclusively on. Prices are expected to be around ₹ 35-40 lakhs of former showroom.

IONIQ 5 recently won the 2022 World Car of the Year at an event in New York City earlier this month. It also embraced the World’s Best Car Design 2022, and the new 2022 World’s Best Electric Vehicle category. The IONIQ 5 has a retro-futiristic look, a clean and airy cabin filled with sustainable materials, and loaded with connectivity and a tech interface. IONIQ 5 has two variants. One uses a 58 kWh battery – and produces a rear -wheel drive variant. That’s the car we expect in India. Also expanded later is the longer range 72.6 kWh battery model with AWD option.

MD at Hyundai Motor India, Unsoo Kim said, “Hyundai Motor India is already committed to expanding our BEV lineup to 6 models by 2028 and today, we are pleased to announce the introduction of the IONIQ 5 at CY 2022 in India”. “IONIQ 5 is poised to redefine customer aspirations with solutions that exceed in every area, enhancing their mobility experience beyond the conventional”, he added. Hyundai Motor India has announced a few months ago that it will bring six EV models to India by 2028. These include the IONIQ 5, the updated new Kona EV, and the aforementioned compact EV being developed for India and emerging markets – which will is also likely to have a Kia counterpart.
