Gujarat Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani will today submit a new bail confession in Assam, where he was arrested in a case of assault and rape of a female police constable.
The Congress will hold a sit -in action against Mr Mevani’s detention in all 34 districts today, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam to launch and lay the foundation stone for a group of projects worth several hundred crore.
Mr Mevani, also a Dalit activist, was on Tuesday sent to police custody for five days after his bail petition was rejected by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Barpeta.
The Gujarat MLA was arrested shortly after a CJM court in Kokrajhar district allowed him bail on Monday, six days after he was arrested by Assam police from his home state of Gujarat over a “negligible” tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Gujarat lawmaker was first arrested on April 20 in connection with a “protestable” tweet against the Prime Minister posted on April 18.
Mr Mevani was flown to Guwahati the next day and then taken to Kokrajhar by road.
