Gianni Infantino announced on Thursday he will run for re -election for a third term as FIFA president. “I want to tell you that I will be running for re -election next year,” Infantino said at the congress of the world football governing body in Doha.
Infantino, a 52-year-old Swiss-Italian lawyer, was secretary-general of European governing body UEFA before becoming FIFA president in 2016 following a corruption scandal that toppled Sepp Blatter earlier.
He then won a second term when he ran unopposed for re -election at congress in Paris in 2019.
His mandate at the time was for four years and the next congress would take place “early next year,” Infantino said.
Delegates from all over the football world have gathered in Doha ahead of this Friday’s World Cup draw, which Qatar is holding in November and December this year.
