Germans Must Save Energy To Put Pressure On Russia – By ASC

The German Economy Minister said the country could reduce energy consumption by switching to using trains and cycling instead of driving.

Germans should start saving energy now to become more independent of Russian fossil fuels, Economy Minister Robert Habeck said, as Europe’s top economies find ways to reduce gas and oil imports from Moscow in response to the war in Ukraine.

With civilian deaths on the rise in Ukraine amid Russian aggression, Germany is under pressure to break away from Russian gas and oil, as critics say the result gives Moscow vital funds to wage war.

Moscow described its invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation”.

Habeck said Germany could become less dependent if citizens reduced their energy use, suggesting using trains or cycling rather than driving when possible.

“Every kilometer that is not driven is a contribution to making it easier to escape Russia’s energy supply. We are also protecting the climate,” Habeck said in an interview with Funke Media Group.

Habeck said a 10% cut from individual energy consumption is possible, adding that employers can contribute by offering employees the option to work from home where possible.

“If possible, one can work from home one or two days a week again – initially voluntarily,” he said.
