Damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant, it loses power again: 8 points

War in Ukraine: Russian troops captured the defunct Chernobyl plant in the early days of the invasion.

A high-voltage power line to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine was damaged by Russian forces shortly after the facility was restored to its electricity supply, a network operator in Ukraine said on Monday.

Here are 8 points from this great story:

  1. “The occupying forces damaged the line that supplies the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the town of Slavutych,” Ukrenergo said on his Facebook page.

  2. The network operator said the line was damaged again “before the power supply was fully restored” and that one of its repair teams would go to “occupied territory” to make further repairs.

  3. The operator added that Chernobyl “cannot be left without a reliable energy supply” and that residents of the nearby town of Slavutych are “dependent” on electricity.

  4. Earlier, the Chernobyl power plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, was cut off on March 9, but the UN’s atomic guard said there was no “serious impact on security.”

  5. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said at the time that Russia was in dire need of a temporary ceasefire to repair the power line for the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, saying radiation could be emitted if a power outage continues.

  6. The nuclear power plant was reopened yesterday, with Ukraine’s energy minister commenting that their energy engineers “could endanger their health and life by avoiding the risk of a potential nuclear disaster that threatened the whole of Europe.”

  7. Russian forces seized the missing plant, killing hundreds of people in 1986 and spreading radioactive contamination to Europe, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

  8. Russian troops also bombed and captured central Zaporizhzhia on March 4, sparking an alarm in Europe over a potential nuclear disaster.
