Christian Eriksen will return to the Danish national team this month after a heart attack on the pitch at the 2020 European Championships last June, the Danish football association said on Tuesday. The 30-year-old, who has been fitted with an implantable cardiovascular defibrillator, has been selected to play in Denmark’s friendly matches on March 26 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and on March 29 in Copenhagen, Serbia, according to the association.

Eriksen has returned to his club this month for English Premier League side Brentford.

The Dane had a heart attack in the opening match of the European Championship in Denmark on June 12 in Copenhagen.

He had to wake up on the field, lying unconscious for a few minutes, shocked by the crowd and watched in horror by millions of TV viewers around the world.

Eriksen spent several days in hospital and was given a pacemaker to regulate his heart rate.

“He’s in good shape. I’ve been following him closely. I was in London recently to see and evaluate him. I saw him in training and in a game and he’s very, very physically fit,” Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand told reporters.

“There are always things that can be improved, that’s normal, but he’s playing at a very high level,” he added.

Eriksen suspended his contract with Inter Milan in December, banning the Italian League from beating players against the Premier League.

In his career, he has played 109 trophies and scored 36 goals for Qatar in Denmark, which has qualified for the 2022 World Cup.
