“Can’t Go Home Because …” Chinese Man Lives At Airport For 14 Years

Wei Jianguo, has lived at the international airport in Terminal 2 since 2008.

A Chinese man has been living at Beijing Capital International Airport for the past 14 years because of his desire to “smoke and drink” without the intervention of his family. Wei Jianguo, who is in his early 60s, has lived at the international airport in Terminal 2 since 2008.

In an interview with China Daily, Wei said that he was fired from his job when he was in his 40s and struggled to maintain any form of employment because he was too old.

Talk about the usual day. Wei Jianguo said he visited the nearest morning market and bought six steamed pork loaves and a bowl of porridge for breakfast, some more food for lunch and a bottle Baiju namely Chinese liquor. “I can’t go home because I don’t have freedom there,” he added. “My family told me if I wanted to stay, I had to stop smoking and drinking. If I couldn’t do that, I had to give them all my monthly government allowance of 1,000 yuan ($ 150). But how would I buy my cigarettes and alcohol? “

Wei also once said that he often did not know what time it was and is now not bothered by waking up around the ocean of travelers.

In 2017, just before Christmas, airport authorities asked Wei to leave and police also drove him to his house located 20 kilometers from the airport. However, he returned to his foster home within a few days saying, “I was fired, lay down, and then I came back, just like the old days … at least I had freedom at the airport.”
