Belgian footballer Miguel Van Damme has died at the age of 28 following a long battle with leukemia. Van Damme was diagnosed with leukemia in 2016 and underwent several courses of treatment for cancer for five years. He managed to eradicate the infection on two occasions, but announced in September 2020 that it had returned for a third time and this time it was incurable. “It is with great sadness that we report that our friend and teammate Miguel Van Damme lost in a long and unbalanced battle against leukemia,” Cercle Brugge said in a statement.
“Words are not enough to describe what we feel, although we know that things have not gone well for a while. Today is a very difficult day in the nearly 123 -year history of Cercle Brugge,” he added, conveying his condolences to goalkeeper Kyana’s wife, son Camille’s daughter, as well as her parents, sisters, friends and family. “
“Miguel, your perseverance and strength to go through it again and again, setback after setback, is amazing. You are an example of positivism, perseverance and fighting spirit. A source of inspiration for everyone who struggles. Forever in our green-black hearts, #16,” add the club.
Van Damme made 40 appearances for Cercle Brugge.
Spanish giants Real Madrid said in a statement: “Real Madrid CF, the club’s president and board of directors are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Circulo de Brujas player Miguel Van Damme.
