New Delhi:

In one historic move, 29 antiques have been returned to India by Australia. These antiques fall into six broad categories according to theme – Lord Shiva and his disciples, worship of Shakti, Lord Vishnu and his form, Jain traditions, portraits and decorative objects.

Antiques date from different time periods, with the earliest dating back to the 9-10th centuries CE.

These are mainly sculptures and paintings made using a variety of materials – sandstone, marble, bronze, brass and paper.

Representing a large geographical region of India, antiques are from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal.

India has brought home some antiques from other countries over the years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inspected the antiques.

In a catalog of antiques shared by the government, one of them-Shiva and his disciples-is exhibited as belonging to the 9th-10th centuries CE. The material is sandstone and was originally referred to as Rajasthan.
