Asian Badminton Championships: Saina Nehwal Wins Opening Match, Lakshya Sen Eliminates First Round -By ASC

London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal won her opening match but Lakshya Sen and B Sai Praneeth were eliminated in the first round of the Asian Badminton Championships on Wednesday. Saina, who has undergone a retry after recovering from a number of troublesome injuries, clinched a 21-15 17-21 21-13 win over Sim Yujin of South Korea. But world championship bronze medalist Sen was surprised by non -selection, Li Shi Feng of China.

The fifth seed from India lost 21-12 10-21 19-21 in the opening round of the men’s singles match which lasted 56 minutes.

World number 19 Praneeth suffered a consecutive 17-21 13-21 defeat against Jonathan Christie of Indonesia.

It was also the end of the road for Aakarshi Kashyap, who lost 15-21 9-21 against Japan’s top seed Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles.

Women’s doubles pair Ashwini Bhat K and Shikga Gautam as well as Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker also made the opening round after losing in consecutive matches.


While Bhat and Gautam lost 19-21 12-21 to Anna Ching Yik Cheong and Teoh Mei Xing of Malaysia, Singhi and Thaker lost 15-21 11-21 against seventh seed Malaysian pair Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah.

Later in the day, PV Sindhu, Malvika Bansod and Kidambi Srikanth will play in their respective singles matches.
