As chaos and tensions erupted over anti-aggression efforts in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area on Monday, Aam Party MLA Aadmi Amanatullah Khan accused the BJP-controlled South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) of sparking disharmony.
“Residents in the area have already removed the encroachment at my request. There are no illegal structures here. They have brought bulldozers and put them here to show that I am obstructing their work to eliminate the encroachment,” Mr Khan told NDTV.
“The Wazu Khana (washing area) and toilets outside the mosque here were removed with the presence of the police, earlier. When there was no intrusion, why did they come here? Just for politics?” said MLA AAP.
Mr Khan claimed that the municipality was undertaking efforts to “disrupt the atmosphere”.
“When I eradicate all the encroachments, then the MCD (Delhi Municipal Corporation) has come to disrupt the atmosphere. Why else are they coming? If there are any encroachments in my area, let me know, I will eradicate,” he said.
Protests erupted in Shaheen Bagh, the heart of anti-citizenship law demonstrations that have angered the ruling BJP at the center, ahead of a demolition movement on Monday as hundreds of people including women staged sit-in as SDMC officials arrived at the scene. bulldozers to conduct drills.
Protesters raised slogans against the SDMC as well as the central government and demanded they stop actions that reflected similar actions in Jahangirpuri last month after communal clashes.
Shaheen Bagh, which lies under the central zone of the SDMC, became the center of protests and sat against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019 for fear it would deprive Muslims of their rights who could not provide decades-old descent papers. Seats in were canceled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Monday’s demolition drive was stopped shortly after it began after Amanatullah Khan’s intervention.
