AAP Councilors Jump Down The Drain On A Cleanup Mission, Then Take A Milk Bath

New Delhi:

Political controversy over the escalating municipal elections, a councilor from Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party made a dramatic point today to the BJP -led civic body. Haseeb-ul-Hasan, an AAP councilor from East Delhi, plunged into an overflowing sewage drain in Shastri Park to clean it up.

Mobile phone video showed him standing chest -deep in a drain in a shiny state while wearing a kurta, using a rake to remove floating debris. His assistant was seen standing cautiously on the hard ground, handing out various tools.

After the cleanup, Mr Hasan’s supporters bathed him in milk, much like the style of actor Anil Kapoor in the Bollywood blockbuster film “Nayak”. Milk bath videos have spread widely as well.

A nominated AAP councilor, Mr Hasan later said the drain was overflowing and repeated complaints to officials, BJP councilors and local MLAs did not help. So he decided to take matters into his own hands today. The local MLA is Anil Kumar Bajpai, a member of the BJP.

The matter was also discussed in the East Delhi Gandhi Nagar Legislative Assembly.

The ruling AAP and the BJP have been embroiled in weeks-long clashes over the Center’s plans to merge the capital’s three civic bodies. Today, the bill came into force that received approval from the cabinet of the Union.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-which will combine the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation-is expected to be tabled in the ongoing Parliamentary Budget Session.

The AAP has questioned the timing of the bill, which is likely to affect public elections. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to postpone the election of civic bodies.

“Prime Minister, the government will come and go. You will not be there, neither will I be there. But don’t weaken the state institutions. Don’t delay the MCD election,” Mr Kejriwal said in a video message earlier this month, which was tweeted by AAP from its official holder.
