5 Reasons Why Russia Reduces Its Military Activity Near Kyiv

Ukraine calls for an international agreement under which other countries will guarantee its security

New Delhi:
Ukraine’s top negotiator said sufficient progress had been made on Tuesday’s talks in Turkey to resolve the conflict with Russia to allow a meeting between the presidents of the two countries.

Here are the top 5 facts in this great story:

  1. Russia said it would reduce military activity around the capital Kyiv following “meaningful” talks in Istanbul as Ukrainian negotiators called for international assurances for the country’s security.

  2. The Ukrainian army recaptured an important suburb of Kyiv and desperately clung to control of the besieged city of Mariupol. The army “liberated” the suburban city of Irpin, said Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky, seizing the main entrance to the northwest of the capital from Russian control.

  3. Western experts described the loss of Irpin as a significant setback for the Russian army, which is still trying to regroup after the first failed attempt to besiege the capital. It has now been more than a month since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s tanks rolled into Ukraine, hoping to cripple or overthrow the democratic government in Kyiv.

  4. Ukraine proposes to adopt neutral status in exchange for security guarantees in negotiations with Russia in Turkey, meaning it will not join a military alliance or host military bases, Ukrainian negotiators said.

  5. Ukraine calls for an international agreement under which other countries will guarantee its security in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO military alliance. Poland, Israel, Turkey and Canada could be among the potential guarantors of security.
